Local supply drive collects thousands for homeless

For more than 600 students in the Alamance-Burlington School System, this back to school season is a little bit better.

A collection organized by Elon University encouraged the community to buy and donate school supplies, depositing them in designated collection boxes on campus in August.

“Hundreds of people donated thousands of items and student volunteers have been working to collect the items,” said Jana Lynn Patterson, project coordinator and assistant vice president for Student Life. “The community’s generosity has eased the burden of many children.”

20 Students from the Student Government Association, the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and the women’s varsity volleyball team sorted and unpacked the items. More than 76 thousand were accepted for Tuesday morning’s delivery, led by CC Cowan and the Elon University moving and set-up crew.

Patterson is still accepting donations, which may be picked up for a second delivery next week. Call 336-278-7200 for more information.
